Zócalo

After months of chatting via Instagram we finally got to meet this gem of a woman – Morgan Leigh owner of Zócalo. ZÓCALO (formerly LOVEleigh Designs) is named after the ‘meeting place.’ Over the past 6 years, Morgan has found many artisans to gather in the Zócalo space, creating this beautiful diverse, and incredible collective.

Morgan is interesting, well traveled, cool as hell and has a heart of gold. Oh and she hand sews most of the pieces on her shelves!

What makes her store so special is that each piece in store, and online is hand made (most by her), purchased or designed directly with the artisan. Meaning every single purchase helps someone in need. Zócalo works with 87+ artisans, predominantly Mexican woman, creating a platform where artists could have access to the tourist market, in order to help sell their things and generate an income for them and their families.

Also a portion of all their sales currently, and over the last six years have gone to fund local projects, individuals and communities in Baja California Sur. Zócalo currently works with, and helps fund: Dog Prana (a Dog Rescue), Punto Verde (a Recycling Centre), and The Padrino Project (a non-profit, providing medical access to underprivileged children in Todos Santos).

“The ethos of the store is everything is ethical in some way, shape or form. Everything gives back to someone in some way, or is eco friendly, fair trade, made by hand. There is nothing in the store just because it is pretty. There has to be more to it.” Morgan passionately says.

We’d like to add that Morgan had a clothing line company before starting Zócalo, 6 years later with no investors , no loans, no sweatshops, no two things quite the same she has opened her second location in Todos Santos!

You can visit her and her team (she hires the coolest, most raddest people) at their Pescadero location open Fri-Sun 9-2:30, on the same property as Baja Beans. The Todos Santos location is open Mon-Sun 10-6pm, located on the corner of Topete and Benito Juarez, in the heart of the historic district.
